My name is Alantha Carter, and I launched The English Language School to offer dynamic, interactive, and low-cost/high-quality ESL courses to English Language Learners. I am a highly-experienced, dedicated, and passionate educator who celebrates the diversity of people, cultures, and ideas. I also believe that learning English is a wonderful and powerful way to bring together people from all over the world!
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. I received my Cambridge English CELTA, Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, from the prestigious European language school, International House, in Barcelona, Spain.
Last year I was a volunteer at the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF) in Trenton, NJ, teaching ESL to adults from a variety of countries and backgrounds. This year I volunteer in the Hopewell Valley and Princeton schools where I tutor ESL students and run an after-school ESL club. I continue to volunteer at LALDEF, where I coach individuals who are preparing for their United States Citizenship/Naturalization Test.
I established The English Language School because I felt that there needed to be a greater variety of truly EFFECTIVE ESL opportunities in central New Jersey. There are a lot of ways to learn English, from attending expensive schools to online tutoring to “teach yourself” books, websites, and apps. TELS offers something different: a personal and authentic, thorough and responsive approach to the teaching of the English language. At TELS, we believe that involved and in person (and in the same room!) instruction enhances confidence and fluency. At TELS, we believe that really getting to know our students as people and as learners accelerates the learning process. And finally, at TELS, we believe that every classroom should be an interactive community of learners; when we communicate, engage, and connect with each other, there is no limit to what we can achieve. At The English Language School:
- Class sizes are kept small so you receive plenty of individual attention and students get to know each other well.
- We know that to become confident in the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) ELLs need instruction in the fundamentals of English grammar, as well as daily practice in vocabulary, pronunciation, and idioms.
- We feel strongly that creativity, play and socializing belong in every classroom–even an English language class! Classes will include independent, partner, and group work; reading and writing authentic texts in a variety of genres; singing songs, playing games and role playing; developing creative and interactive projects, giving presentations, and more!
Learning a new language is a process, not a destination…
Traveler, your footprints
are the path and nothing more;
Traveler, there is no path,
the path is made by walking.
Please join us at The English Language School; we look forward to guiding you on YOUR English language journey!
